Colleen completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Counselling Psychology through Athabasca University. Colleen is a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists, and she is a member of the Psychological Association of Alberta and the Canadian Psychological Association. Colleen’s desire to support young people and families began over a decade ago in her role as education assistant for students with special needs. Colleen remains committed to supporting children with disabilities and struggling families through her work with FSCD and CFS programming, when she is not seeing clients at Mama Massage.
Colleen believes that clients are the experts of their lives, and she is firmly grounded in a client-led and culturally responsive approach to counselling. Colleen uses a collaborative approach when working with clients to uncover their strengths, recognize themselves as capable, and achieve their counselling goals. She draws from strengths-based, trauma-informed, and family systems theories in her with individuals, couples, and families, integrating narrative, solution-focused, and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) techniques as determined by each client’s unique counselling needs. Colleen is also trained in basic EMDR Therapy and uses this approach to support clients in healing from past trauma that is affecting their current functioning.
Establishing a trusting therapeutic relationship with clients is the key to successful therapy. Colleen feels deeply humbled to walk alongside her clients in their healing journey and she in awe of their strength to seek support and take action towards positive change.
